We must do everything possible to help... students get excited about books.

-Wil Clay

Thank you for coming in and showing us so many amazing things, and telling us about your son who wrote his own newspaper and got the adults to pay attention to what the kids wanted. I really wish that you would come in and talk to us more about whatever is interesting.

Neil Rutan, Student, Totem Junior High, Kent, WA

PROGRAMS, CLASSES and WORKSHOPS

It was obvious to all of us that you possess a passion for your craft and that you possess an unusual ability to touch children with your work. You presented wonderfully simple ideas which the teachers will apply to their own lessons in the future . . . wonderfully simple but profound strategies.

Jim McNally, Principal – Cedar Wood Elementary, Bothell, WA

Young Authors’ Day

The purpose of this entire program is to get your kids excited about books and writing and – most especially - what they can do for themselves. So my focus during Young Authors’ presentations is much more on your students than on myself. Because of this, even the most reluctant writers have felt new doorways and windows open to them. Many of them go back to their classrooms eager to write and produce as they have never done before. In fact, you will see just about all of your students inspired and participating more than ever! I love to see this kind of exuberance because it means that children are discovering their innate abilities for creating and being productive.

The early morning all-school assembly (one or two assemblies, your choice) is an entertaining, very spirited slide presentation with student participation. Students get to see how personal experience, research, playfulness and imagination are all necessary parts of writing and illustrating. Very little kindergarteners, enthusiastic students, and seasoned, sometimes crusty older kids, are all touched by inspirations from nature, science, art, and some of Emily’s own work and experience.

The assembly is followed by hands-on workshops – not just two or three sessions, but back-to-back workshops for each grade level. These are hands-on experience for the kids, all with paper and pencils in their hands. They may ask questions, will do creative brainstorming, and work on writing and drawing. They get to see how these skills can enhance all areas of their schoolwork. It is always really amazing to see how much can happen, one child at a time, in so short a time.

As follow-up to this one day, please explore this website to find a continuing source of inspirations, teaching tools, helpful articles and downloadable materials.

Books and Blankets - A Family Evening

This is one very special and meaningful hour! It is for those kids who just want more and who want to share it all with their parents, siblings, grandparents and teddy bears! It is a slide talk/workshop that adds wonderfully to all the creative inspirations of the day, offering insights, understanding and support to your students, families and community. A wonderful addition to the daytime program.

Additional Days

To involve all or some of your students in further adventures in writing, art, and creative thinking, your school may wish to book additional days. Discounts available.

Inservice Days

For credit or clock hours. Please ask for information about teacher-training re: bringing creativity to many classroom requirements.

Teenagers

Yes! Emily has had wonderful results in working with junior high and high school students! Using many of the same materials but with a different perspective, Emily has surprised older kids - and in turn they have seen new possibilities for themselves.
